ENCYKLOPEDYJA POWSZECHNA

Warsaw 1859-1868, Nakl., druk i własnosc S. Orgelbrand, each volume approximately 1000 pages; format 15x24.5cm, the whole size on the shelf is approximately 138 cm
"Among the many published items, a special event was the Encyklopedia Powszechna published by Samuel Orgelbrand in 1859-1868 in 28 volumes. Orgelbrand began correspondence with the authors regarding its publication in mid-1856. In 1858, he established an editorial committee, which included K.W. Wóycicki , L. Rogalski, F.H. Lewestam, J. Pankiewicz, later also F.M. Sobieszczanski. The secretary of this committee for a year was Józef Grajnert, and after him Cezary Biernacki. 181 Polish scientists were involved in its development. The encyclopedia was initially subscribed to by three thousand subscribers and was published from 1859, in the form of issues - three a month. After 1863 (January Uprising), the number of subscribers dropped to below 1,000, but despite the increase in costs and exceeding the planned volume of the publication (originally planned for 15 volumes), the edition of the Encyclopedia was completed in 1868, having spent on it a staggering amount of 120,000 rubles at that time.
