ALICE IN WONDERLAND
ALA W KRAINIE CZAROW
illustrations by Kamil Mackiewicz
translated by Marja Morawska
Circulation Gebethner i Wolff [1927], Warsaw; pp. 155, [1], format 14x20,5 cm
We present a rare, bibliophile copy of the first faithful Polish translation of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel, published by Gebethner i Wolff in 1927.
The translation by Maria Morawska and Antoni Lange is faithful to the original, preserving the rhythm, humor, and logic of Carroll’s text, capturing the full character of Wonderland. This edition holds key significance in the history of Alice’s reception in Poland, setting the standard for subsequent translations and serving as a reference point for collectors and scholars of children’s literature.
The earlier 1910 edition, published as Alinka w Krainie Czarów, although historically interesting, was a simplified adaptation – the heroine’s name was changed (“Alinka”), the language was archaic, the illustrations were simplified, and the text was less faithful to Carroll, meaning it does not fully capture the original work.
Notable are the original illustrations by Kamil Mackiewicz — an artist and graphic designer from the first half of the 20th century, representing a school of book illustration characterized by attention to detail, clear composition, and expressive drawings. Mackiewicz created these illustrations specifically for this edition, giving Wonderland a unique and unmistakable character. His work harmonizes with the text, enriching the narrative and making this edition a valuable work of book art.
Additionally, the typography of this edition — carefully set pages, well-balanced margins, and harmonious layout — enhances the narrative, giving the book a distinct reading rhythm and aesthetic appeal.
