This topic is discussed by the master of SF literature in the series of short stories entitled: Diaries of the stars.

The first episodes of Diaries of the Stars come from the beginning of the 1950s, the last story - The Last Journey of Ijon Tichy - was written in 1999. The series is continued with the novels Local Vision (1982) and Peace on Earth (1987).
