Est. T.XIII, 171 Wierzbowski. Inkunabuł – Polonik!

VERY GOOD CONDITION, healthy paper with a few discolorations.

Handwritten marginalia from the era, very numerous, glamorous initials in red ink in the era.

The first booklet is the title card. and 7 numbered worksheets "Confessionale: Defecerunt scrutantes scrutinio" by Antoninus Florentine (1 ff., VII num. BL.), printed in Strasbourg in 1488 by Martin Flach: "Guide to confession" by Antoninus Florentine (1389-1459), Archbishop of Florence and the Dominicans.

The second book, published in the same year by the same publishing house, is an almost complete Polonica by Mikołaj of Błonie [Nicolaus de Blona, and Nicolaus de wie or Nicolaus de Staravolcio de Błonie; d. 1440]; there are no cards collated with letters a-a5. It is the "Treatise on the Sacraments", commissioned by Bishop Stanisław Ciołek, around 1430, intended for the clergy of the diocese of Poznań. Under a special order of the bishop, parish priests were obliged to have a copy of the treaty. The author, while writing the treatise, tried to avoid the complexities of a scholastic-canonist nature, emphasizing the distinctiveness of Polish customs and emphasizing his individuality. The treaty enjoyed great popularity not only in Poland but also abroad. "One of the earliest examples of official textbooks" (Schulte II, 443).

The author came from Błonie (Mazowsze), his father was a certain Falisław. From 1414, he studied at the Krakow Academy under the tutelage of Stanisław of Skrabimierz and Paweł Włodkowic. In 1415 he became a bachelor in artibus, in 1421 a master's degree, and a little later he obtained a doctorate in decrees. In the years 1422-1427 he lectured at the Academy with a bachelor's degree, at that time he was nicknamed "bee" due to his diligence and accuracy at work. At the same time, he was also the royal chaplain, while working in the court office at Stanisław Ciołek. In 1427 he asked the university authorities to be transferred to the rectory. The authorities allowed him and he became the parish priest of Charłupia Minor (Archdiocese of Gniezno). After Ciołek was consecrated bishop of Poznań, he became its chaplain (he moved to Poznań in January 1429) and worked on a textbook on the sacraments, which, upon completion, was published in many European countries. In 1435, he probably accompanied Ciołek to Basel (elected by the Poznań chapter as its prosecutor at the local council). He spent the last years of his life in his native Mazovia, probably in Czersk, where he became the rectory after Ciołek's death (1437). He was also a member of the Płock chapter and a canon of the Warsaw collegiate church.

Martin Flach published the Treatise on the Sacraments of Nicholas of Błonie several times. A printer from Basel, he was active in Strasbourg in the years 1472 - 1500, where he took over the famous publishing house of Johannes Mentelin (ca. 1410 - 1478), after his son-in-law Adolf Ruschu (1435-1489). The 1488 edition does not differ significantly from the other editions of the Treaty that left Martin Flach's printing house. Attention is drawn to the handwritten notes in the book and the decorative initials made in red ink.

The beautiful state of preservation is also noteworthy, especially since the great demand for a study, giving clergymen tips on how to celebrate mass, meant that most of the copies bear traces of intensive use! A very rare incunabula in the European state of preservation!

It is worth noting that only 1-2 incunabula appear at Polish auctions during the year in domestic turnover. Due to our historical achievements, the state of preservation of Polish incunabula, which is rich in various wars, fires, and destructions, usually leaves much to be desired, therefore the notion of European state of preservation and Polish state of preservation has become common on the market.
