"Sztafeta" is a colourful reportage panorama from the interwar period about the reconstruction of the Second Polish Republic. In preparation for writing it, Wańkowicz collected dozens of pieces of information, conducted hundreds of conversations, starting with the president, deputy prime minister, ministers, and ending with sailors, miners and teachers.
Melchior Wańkowicz (1892-1974) - an outstanding Polish writer, called the king of Polish reportage, one of the greatest individuals of Polish literature of the 20th century. In the years 1943-46 he was a war correspondent of General Anders' II Corps. In the years 1949-58 he lived in the USA, then returned to Poland. In 1964 he was arrested and put on political trial for sending materials defamatory to the Polish People's Republic, which was widely known all over the world.
