Book of the Month Club Edition, 1969 – Luxury Full-Leather Binding – Limited Edition (Copy No. 1 of 100)
G. P. Putnam’s Sons, New York, 1969; pp. 448; format approx. 15 × 22 cm
Early issue/early BCE.
An early Book of the Month Club issue, identified by the gutter code 25 L. The original dust jacket is retained, bearing the “1726” code on the rear flap.
Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, first published in 1969, is one of the defining American novels of the twentieth century. The story of the Corleone family combines crime, family loyalty, power, ambition, and the complex mechanisms of the American Mafia, centering on Vito Corleone and the transformation of his son Michael.
This 1969 Book of the Month Club Edition, issued by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, is presented here in a completely new luxury full-leather binding, handcrafted by our atelier. The spine features raised bands, each decorated with a blind-tooled line, while the compartments are enriched with deep tooling. The covers are framed with a sophisticated border, first blind-tooled and then finished with gold tooling. The author’s name is gilt, accompanied by an emblem tooled in red.
The spine is further decorated with two red leather labels bearing gilt lettering. The book is finished with hand-marbled endpapers, while the fore-edge and other edges are hand-coloured to match the marbled pattern.
The original publisher’s dust jacket has been preserved, an important feature of the present copy. The jacket shows only light creasing along the folds.
Copy No. 1 of 100 numbered copies, making this a limited collector’s edition created specifically in our atelier. Each copy is individually numbered and handcrafted, combining a landmark work of American literature with the traditional art of fine bookbinding.
