Second polish edition. Very rare!
The first edition appeared a year earlier, it was most likely pressed from the same typesetting, but had a different title page: On the Origin of Man. Translated from English with the authorization of the author Ludwik Masłowski. Kraków: by the "Kraju" Publishing House, in the fonts of the "Kraju" printing house (Zwierzyniec No. 24), 1874, pp. [2], [1]-246, [8], illustrations in the text (woodcuts).
This is one of those books that shook the world. On the basis of many years of research, also referring to the findings of other scientists, Darwin presented a theory according to which the ancestor of the human race is nothing less than an ape. Written in the first person, full of personal reflections and comments, the work of the English scholar is not at all iconoclastic, and certainly not atheistic, which some circles attributed to it. The evolutionary determinism and the image of the ruthless struggle for existence contained in this treatise, published in 1871, were used by many leaders of totalitarian states, especially Hitler, to justify criminal actions, but Darwin was above all a scientist who, using the research apparatus available to the nineteenth-century naturalist, formulated a series of conclusions of a revolutionary nature, just as Copernicus was a revolutionary when he announced his heliocentric theory.
