DARWIN Karol [1809–1882]
PODROZ NATURALISTY
Journal of observations on natural history and geology of the regions visited during a voyage around the world on H.M.S. “Beagle” under the command of Captain Fitz Roy
Translated from the latest edition (1884) by Józef Nusbaum,
with 14 woodcut illustrations in the text
Warsaw 1887, Drukarnia Przeglądu Tygodniowego; published by Przegląd Tygodniowy, pp. II, 412, XVIII
A fundamental work by Darwin, constituting a record of his famous five-year scientific voyage around the world aboard H.M.S. “Beagle” (1831–1836), commanded by Robert FitzRoy. Written in the form of a journal, the work presents detailed naturalistic and geological observations from South America, the Pacific islands (including the Galápagos), and other regions visited during the expedition. Descriptions of flora, fauna, and geological formations are combined with scientific reflection, which later became one of the foundations for the formulation of the theory of evolution by natural selection. The work is distinguished not only by its scientific importance but also by its vivid, almost literary travel narrative.
The present 1887 edition is the first Polish translation, prepared by Józef Nusbaum on the basis of one of the most recent English editions (1884). The publication is enriched with 14 woodcut illustrations in the text, enhancing both its scholarly and editorial value. Nusbaum’s translation played a significant role in disseminating modern scientific thought among Polish readers of the late 19th century.
Józef Nusbaum (1859–1917) was a Polish zoologist, professor at the University of Lwów, and one of the most important popularizers of Darwinism in Poland. Karol Darwin (1809–1882) was a British naturalist whose research on the variability of species led to the formulation of the theory of evolution, first presented in 1859 in his work On the Origin of Species, profoundly influencing the development of biology and the natural sciences.
