J.R.R. TOLKIEN
THE HOBBIT
(i.e. There and Back Again / Hobbit, czyli tam i z powrotem)
Translated by Maria Skibniewska
Warsaw, ISKRY 1960; pp. 374, [2], 2 folding maps, illustrations in text; format 13x20.5 cm
First Polish edition of the iconic fantasy novel by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892–1973) — the legendary British author and philologist at Oxford University. Originally published in Great Britain in 1937, The Hobbit became one of the most beloved and influential works of modern fantasy.
This Polish translation, considered canonical, was rendered by Maria Skibniewska, the creator of the Polish term “krasnolud” (dwarf). The edition includes illustrations by Jan Młodożeniec, one of Poland’s most celebrated graphic artists and a co-founder of the Polish School of Posters, whose works gained acclaim and awards both nationally and internationally.
Full contemporary leather binding, hand-crafted in a style inspired by Tolkien’s world.
On the front cover, a red leather dragon in deep relief; on the back, golden Elvish runes embossed and gilded. Coloured fore edge, original front cover preserved inside.
Condition: Good — original publisher’s cover with light creases, yellowing of pages, a stain in the upper right corner, ownership stamp on the title page verso and final text leaf. Maps in good copies. An impressive and collectible binding.
✨ Each copy is a testament to European craftsmanship for American readers — a bridge between tradition and imagination.
