The Catcher in the Rye is a novel by American writer J.D. Salinger, first published in 1951. Shortly after its release, it became one of the most stigmatized books in the United States. The book sparked controversy, among other things, for its themes of underage sexuality and the use of profanity by the main character.
Although initially published as a book for adult readers, it is now required reading in high schools and colleges in all English-speaking countries. It has been translated into almost every major language in the world. It is estimated that approximately 250,000 copies of The Catcher in the Rye are sold worldwide annually, representing approximately 65 million copies sold since its release. It was listed among the 100 best books published between 1923 and 2005 by Time magazine. It was ranked 64th in a poll of the 100 best English-language novels in the 20th century, compiled by Modern Library.
