"In the small town of Monterey, just after the end of World War I, a group of paisanos, descendants of Spanish conquistadors, live. These free spirits share a deep disdain for work, so they survive on looting and leftovers scrounged from restaurants. They spend most of their time sleeping, courting women, and fighting over the most precious metal: wine. The novel's protagonist, Danny, lives in the Tortilla Flat neighborhood, whose home becomes a meeting place for his friends, always hungry for food and adventure: Pilon, Pablo, Jesus Mary, Big Joe the Portuguese, and Pirate.
Adapting the themes and structure of the King Arthur legends for his own use, Steinbeck created a true Camelot in the Californian town and populated it with a colorful band of knights with manners straight out of Rabelais."
