"On the Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals" is a late work of Darwin. He speaks openly about the origin of man from a monkey, he is not afraid to use the word evolution and often refers to Herbert Spencer.
It is worth noting that this is the first serious dissertation on the expression of emotions. Darwin evokes numerous examples, delights with the richness of description. He goes to great lengths to reconstruct the evolutions and find the justification for the mimic movements. He describes each issue in as much detail as possible, analyzes the pros and cons of the adopted way of reasoning, quotes his supporters and opponents, and often admits with disarming honesty that he is unable to draw a final conclusion, leaving the reader with his doubts and thoroughly collected arguments from both sides.
"The Polish version of this late work by Darwin was published only a year after the British first edition.
The work "Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals", although chronologically closing the cycle of Darwin's publications devoted to the theory of evolution, was the first to be made available to the Polish reader, long before the complete Polish translation of the epochal "On the Origin of Species" (Warsaw 1884)...
The boards with blueprints are signed "Światłodruk K. i W. Brandel Warszawa No. 1249/57 Copy from the English original". The Polish version was made by Konrad Brandel (1838-1920), one of the most outstanding Polish photographers of the second half of the 19th century, the inventor of the first handheld camera. Brandel's blueprint illustrations to Darwin's work, older by only three years than the first hand-printed blueprints in Poland (published in 1868 and 1869, two albums by T. Szajnok (1833-1894): Krasiczyńskie Album and Żółkiewskie Album), rank among the earliest prepared by this method in our country."
