Maps – Old Cartography and Historical Maps
Old maps are not only geographical documents but also testimonies of history, the development of knowledge, and ways of representing the world. At the Sobieski Antiquarian Bookshop, we present historical maps, old atlases, and collectible cartography, interesting both for history enthusiasts and demanding collectors. Individual specimens allow discovering changing state borders, the development of cities and regions, and the image of the world preserved by ancient cartographers.
Old Maps and Atlases
Old maps document political, administrative, and geographical changes over the centuries. Among the objects sought by collectors are maps of individual countries and regions, city plans, geographical and historical maps, as well as atlases published by well-known cartographers and publishing houses. Their significance depends, among other things, on the date and place of publication, authorship, rarity, technique of execution, and condition.
Historical Maps of Poland, Europe, and the World
Old cartography allows tracing changes in borders, the development of settlement networks, and the evolution of geographical knowledge. A special place is occupied by old maps of Poland and Polish lands, maps of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as historical maps of Europe and other parts of the world. Depending on the period and purpose, these maps can serve as sources for historical, regional, and genealogical research, as well as interesting collectible items.
Original Collectible Maps
The value of an old map results from many factors: its author, time of creation, edition size, historical significance, graphic qualities, and the condition of the specific specimen. Particular attention is drawn to maps made using old printing techniques, including copper engravings, as well as hand-colored specimens. Completeness, possible damages and repairs, and the provenance of the object, if documented, are also important.
The Sobieski Antiquarian Bookshop invites you to discover old cartography and learn about the history recorded on maps. This is an offer for those building collections of historical maps, interested in the history of Poland and Europe, and seeking original objects combining documentary value with the artistry of old graphics.
