Two faces of one book - a beautiful copy versus one for repair.

03-04-2026

Discover how dramatically the condition of two copies of the same book can differ-from a beautifully preserved, complete binding to a damaged example requiring costly conservation. Learn what truly matters when evaluating rare books and what to look for before making a purchase.

Two Faces of One Book – A Beautiful Copy vs. One in Need of Repair

In our video, we present two copies of the same book in completely different states of preservation. It’s a perfect opportunity to see how condition affects both value and the pleasure of engaging with a book.

Our copy – perfect in every detail

Binding: beautiful, with gilt decoration and an illustration mounted on the front cover
Interior: clean, well-preserved, in collector’s condition
Additions: original publisher’s dust jacket preserved
Result: ready for a collection, immediately enjoyable

Copy in need of repair – a huge amount of work and limited possibilities

Binding: severely damaged, spine missing
Pages: tears, edge defects, areas of dirt and staining
Text block: stapled binding – requires cleaning and preparation before any repair, washing, or chemical treatment can begin
Restoration: some pages require reconstruction before rebinding
Losses: several plates and the entire table of contents missing – significant flaws

Despite the best conservation efforts, the final result is not always satisfactory, and the investment of time and money in professional restoration is substantial.

Conclusions – sometimes it’s worth choosing a ready example

Restoration requires time, expertise, and significant cost
The result will never match a well-preserved copy
Beautiful copies are still available on the market – it is often better to invest in a ready piece than to try to “bring back to life” a damaged one
