THE HOBBIT
i.e. There and Back Again / HOBBIT, czyli tam i z powrotem
Translated by Maria Skibniewska
Warsaw: ISKRY, 1960; pp. 374, [2], 2 fold-out maps, illustrations in text; format: 13 × 20.5 cm
First Polish edition of the iconic fantasy novel by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892–1973) — a British writer and Oxford philologist. Originally published in Great Britain in 1937, The Hobbit quickly became a cornerstone of modern fantasy literature.
This first Polish translation — regarded as canonical — was made by Maria Skibniewska, who introduced the Polish word “krasnolud” [dwarf] into Tolkien’s world. The volume is illustrated by Jan Młodożeniec, one of Poland’s greatest graphic artists and co-founder of the Polish School of Posters.
FULL LEATHER CONTEMPORARY BINDING, richly decorated in the Tolkien aesthetic: a handcrafted red leather dragon on the front cover, golden Elvish runes on the spine, and coloured fore edge.
The original publisher’s cover is preserved inside.
Condition: Very good — small stamp on the back of the title page, title page inserted after the title leaf; otherwise, a BEAUTIFUL COPY.
✨ Each copy reflects the artistry of Polish craftsmanship — where tradition meets imagination.
