The Gulag Archipelago - a monumental work by the renowned writer and thinker Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, devoted to the prison and camp martyrdom of the Russian people and citizens of other Soviet republics and countries, combines elements of novel, autobiography, reportage, and the memoirs of witnesses and participants.
Written in the form of a historical account, the book was written between 1958 and 1968. It was first published in the West in 1973, and officially in the Soviet Union in 1989 (previously circulating underground).
The book is a testimony to the criminal activities of the communist system in the USSR. Drawing on his own experiences, the author shows the development and spread of the Soviet prison system, whose primary goal was to "eliminate hostile social classes." As a result, an entire "archipelago" of concentration camps and labor camps was created, named after the governing institution (Glavnoye Uprawleniye Lagerej) the Gulag Archipelago.
The work is a testament to the gradual stripping of human dignity and the forcing of slave labor under lofty slogans.
In the West, this book caused a stir, leading to the dispelling of illusions about the communist system and the weakening of the influence of Western European communists.
The first Polish edition, translated by Jerzy Pomianowski, was published in 1974 in Paris (Literary Institute).
