Julian Tuwim's poem "Locomotive" is one of the most famous pieces of children's poetry. It resembles a reportage from a railway station from which a powerful locomotive starts. It is a combination of description, humor and play with words.
The poem gained popularity not only in Poland, it was translated into many foreign languages, including German, French, Czech, English, Russian, and even Yiddish.
The piece was published in 1938 as the title poem of the volume "Locomotive and other merry poems for children", where it found itself in the company of other - now almost equally popular - songs such as Rzepka or Bird Radio.
Today, in the "best of the best" series, we present this classic, first edition of the Locomotive.
To the surprise of some, it was neutralized not by Jan Marcin Szancer, but by a tandem of extremely talented pre-war graphic designers: Levitt and Hi, whose success and fame was brought about by the publication of this inconspicuous children's book.
Levitt and Him were invited to London in 1937, where the Lund Humphreys gallery organized an exhibition devoted to their work. Encouraged by the success of the exhibition, the artists decided to stay in Great Britain. During World War II, the artists created many posters and other publications supporting Great Britain's war effort, and they also collaborated with the Polish government-in-exile.
The group was disbanded in 1955, Jan Levittitt and Jerzy Him took up their own work.
