"Burghart Heinrich Gottfried (1705-1771), was born in Dzierżoniów (Reichenbach) on July 5, 1705. In 1720, at the age of 15, Heinrich Gottfried was sent to the St. Elizabeth Gymnasium in Wrocław. In 1725, he went on the behest of his father to Mieroszów (Friedland), where he assisted a certain expert chemist for a year.He spent the next year at the side of a surgeon from Dzierżoniów, learning how to dress wounds, assemble broken limbs and other activities, while acquiring medical knowledge under the guidance of his father. to Frankfurt (Oder), where he studied medicine, attended lectures on philosophy, mathematics, anatomy, history and fine arts, and also practiced drawing and painting for his own pleasure. ". He started his medical practice there and soon gained notoriety by successfully treating several hopeless cases. When in 1731 he received information about his father's serious illness and went to Dzierżoniów. Soon after his arrival, his father recovered, but he himself fell ill and was bedridden for many months, and he did not recover until 1732, after treatment in Lądek. At that time, his parents decided that he should open a medical practice in Wrocław, where they owned a tenement house, where he settled in 1734. He quickly found in Wrocław not only many patients, but also a lot of friends, and access to numerous libraries, nature clinics and art collections allowed him to develop his scientific interests. However, he rarely stayed in the city for more than three months, because out of concern for his health, he went to the mountains at least twice a year. In 1736 he wrote down the observations of plants, animals and rocks collected in the years 1733−35 during his multiple visits to Sleza and published them in the book "Iter Sabothicum". In the same year, he also published the extremely popular chemical work "Destillierkunst" and the first volume of the scientific journal "Medicorum Silesiacorum Satyrae", which quickly gained many readers. In March 1743, Frederick II appointed him professor of the Royal Gymnasium in Brzeg (Brieg). In 1744 he published a description of the Lądek hot springs and their healing properties. A year later, together with the secret counselor Francek, he joined the commission whose task was to examine the royal mines in Złoty Stok (Reichenstein) and Srebrna Góra (Silberberg). In 1748, in a similar capacity, he investigated the possibilities of reviving the declining ore mining in Upper Silesia, examining the quality of lead and silver ores in the vicinity of Tarnowskie Góry (Tarnowitz). At the Junior High School in Brzeg, he lectured in mathematics and natural sciences, and although teaching was his main occupation, he was still a practicing doctor and made efforts to combine the efforts of all doctors in Brzeg for the benefit of patients. He was a member of the Imperial − Royal Scientific Society in Olomouc, and in March 1756, recommending himself and as the third naturalist assuming the nickname "Zosimus", was accepted as a member of the Leopoldine-Carolingian Academy of Naturalists. For many years, he collected descriptions of rare diseases, prepared biographies of Silesian naturalists and Silesian bishops, and also translated chemical, medical and numismatic works into German. He died on July 16, 1771 in Brzeg. "Source: Upper Silesia Nature Heritage Center Materials Studies Volume 3, Mirosław Syniawa Biographical Dictionary of Silesian Naturalists Part, Katowice 2000

MICHAELIS ALOYSII SINAPII

ABSURDA VERA SIVE PARADOXA MEDICA QUORUM … 1686

Hippocratis. ...

Genevae 1697, pp (12), 116; (8), 114, (6); (12), 195; format: 11 x 18 cm.

The work of Michał Alojzy Synapius, the doctor chancellor Radziwiłł. The first part is dedicated to J. K. Lubomirski, the author argues here with Galen's medical claims, including his theories about humor and temperaments.

The second part is of a more practical nature, and we can also find medical information about Poland, e.g. about the medicine of the Cossacks and Tatars, about the tangle, and about the use and abuse of alcohol for treatment.

Giedroyć. in the work "Biographical and bibliographic sources to the history of medicine in old Poland." published in 1911, he writes: "And so as to the causes of the tangling, he examines those given by various authors and does not agree with them. he opposed theories that it was caused by river properties or that it was caused by faulty structure of the skin glands. He believes, however, that it is caused by climatic conditions, the abuse of vodka, an excess of meat dishes and diet, and the best medicine is borscht. "

The section On charms, in which the author states, "that he himself saw in Lithuania those who had the power to harm other people and animals" [also after Giedroyc] is worth mentioning. There are also practical recommendations on how to cure various diseases, e.g. scurvy or runny nose, and finally interesting recipes, e.g. vodka for everything, or mulled wine with egg yolk, sugar and general Czarnecki's roots? Or a Moscow recipe for medicinal use of tea.

The end of the third section, dedicated to Jan III Sobieski, is a testimony to the benefits of pills prepared from gold and other substances in Vienna by doctor Laska.

The final third is a critical review of the 83 aphorisms of Hippocrates.

The Estreicher notes this old print, but gives no known copy!

In Poland, Estreicher records two copies with a similar title from 1693: "Absurda vera, occasione potissimarū quarundam controversiarum: quae Neotericis, cum Galenicis intercedunt: Orbi curioso Medicorum, in compendio denuo exhibita, authore Michaele Aloysio Sinapio v. Senfft. Ungar. Phil. et Medic. D. Celsissimi Principis Radzievilii M. D. Lithuaniae Archi-Cancellarij, personae et aulae medico "in the Krasiński library, which was burnt in 1944 and in the Zamojski family, which was mostly destroyed.

Very rare!
